10 Yr Transformation of the Obscuring Wind in NGC 5548

چکیده
A decade ago the archetypal Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 5548 was discovered to have undergone major spectral changes. The soft X-ray flux had dropped by a factor of 30 while new broad and blueshifted UV absorption lines appeared. This explained emergence obscuring wind from accretion disk. Here we report on striking long-term variability disk in including observations taken 2021-2022 with Swift Observatory Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). hardening as result obscuration has declined over years, reaching its lowest 2022 at which point find C IV line be nearly vanished. associated narrow low-ionization lines, produced previously when shielded X-rays, are also remarkably diminished 2022. We highly significant correlation between variabilities equivalent width line, demonstrating that is inherently linked winds. derive for first time relation covering fractions using evolution. likely caused an increasingly intermittent supply outflowing streams results growing gaps interstices clumpy wind, thereby reducing fractions.

Observations of Ngc 5548
We present simultaneous observations by EUV E, ASCA, and RXT E of the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548. These data indicate that variations in the EUV emission (at D0.2 keV) appear to lead similar modulations in higher energy keV) X-rays by D10È30 ks. This is contrary to popular (Z1 models which attribute the correlated variability of the EUV, UV and optical emission in type 1 Seyferts to reproce...
متن کاملDYNAMICS OF BROAD EMISSION-LINE REGION IN NGC 5548: HYDROMAGNETIC WIND MODEL versus OBSERVATIONS
We analyze the results of long-term observations of broad-line region (BLR) in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 and provide a critical comparison with the predictions of a hydromagnetically-driven outflow model of Emmering, Blandford and Shlosman. We use this model to generate a time series of C IV line profiles that have responded to a time varying continuum. Our modifications to the model includ...
متن کاملPhysical properties of the BLR of NGC 5548 3
We investigate the variability of physical parameters in the Broad Line Region (BLR) of NGC 5548 using the Boltzmann plot (BP) method. We apply the method on the Balmer lines observed from 1996 to 2004, and find that variability earlier detected in the lines, is also present in the temperature. We find that the average temperature for the considered period was T≈ 10000 K, and that varies from 6...
متن کاملDynamics of Warm Absorbing Gas in Seyfert Galaxies: Ngc 5548
A hydromagnetic (MHD) wind from a clumpy molecular accretion disk is invoked to explain observations of warm absorbing gas at UV and X-ray energies in Seyfert 1 galaxies. This paper focuses on two important issues: (1) compatibility of kinematics and dynamics of an MHD wind with the observed properties of warm absorbers; and (2) the relationship between the UV and X-ray absorbing gases. We prov...
متن کاملPhotoionized H β emission in NGC 5548 : it breathes !
Emission-line regions in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and other photoionized nebulae should become larger in size when the ionizing luminosity increases. This ‘breathing’ effect is observed for the Hβ emission in NGC 5548 by using Hβ and optical continuum light curves from the 13-yr (1989–2001) AGN Watch monitoring campaign. To model the breathing, we use two methods to fit the observed light ...
